Dot Pattern Cards with Emoji Transitions - Subitising Extension

(0)
How to use this resource Subitising is the ability to recognise patterns of dots instantly without having to count them. This is integrated into the Early Mathematical framework as a basis for building further strategic thinking after the Emergent Stage. Counting by ones can often be a strategy that can be a hard one to shift with some learners. Ongoing exposure to these regular patterns can be useful to lead on to more complex strategies. The following cards are an extension of this basic concept, the students look for those patterns within a larger group in order to get a notion of combining groups of patterns in order to ‘see’ a larger number without having to count. The following video is an excellent example of how to open discussions with your students and encourage them to explain their mathematical thinking. Simply click onto this link, or the image to watch the presentation. You can ask your students to ‘draw’ an image of what they see, or simply discuss this in pairs, groups, or a teacher led discussion. (Counting by one is not encouraged with this activity). You will get both a powerpoint and PDF presentation 65 pages in each

Subitising Dot Patterns - How Many Bubbles?

(0)
Subitising is the instant recognition of patterns of shapes to be able to determine a number. There are many different ways in which we all see these patterns and they are a lively discussion topic for any primary grade class to determine how we interpret these displays of dots. I encourage you to view this dot number talk by Jo Boaler in one of her many inspirational presentations https://vimeo.com/129139086 where she works through this concept with a middle primary group of students. This download comes with both a PowerPoint presentation and a PDF version with 27 slides/pages (including credits and terms of use). As the slides increase in difficulty the students transfer their knowledge from class discussions and can readily determine a quite complex display of dots on a page. The graphics are engaging and visually inviting for students with some wonderful clipart from Manny's Sketchpad . A useful addition to any Maths Teaching resource kit for primary school teaching.

COUNTING GAME 1-10- What's in the tree?

COUNTING GAME 1-10- What's in the tree?

(0)
How to use this resource These fun mats can be laminated and used to match the animals of the students choosing to go and live in the trees. As laminated sheets students can use them to put matching playdough apples etc in the trees, trace over the letters and match counters or playdough in the ten frames provided. With larger numbers, students can use these as a dice game and see who can fill their tree first with the exact number shown on the mat. If you are looking at the number 8 and the child throws a 2, then they know they will need to throw a 6 or any combination that adds to 6 to complete their tree. If they throw a number that is too big, then they miss a turn. These mats can be used as part of group rotations with students filling all sets of cards as an activity. Suitable for pre-school or early kindergarten students.

Base Ten Trading Games

(0)
What will you need? •Each player needs a gameboard, some MAB blocks (ten units, and whatever the goal number of tens and hundreds are for each game) •One dice for games up to fifty. •You can introduce two dice to play the game of Mouse Trap 50 and 100 trade. HOW TO PLAY •The person who throws the highest number goes first (or has longest hair, next birthday ....paper, scissors, rock etc). •The aim of the game is to be the first player to cover all of their ten blocks (or all of the blocks on their playmat….this is determined by group agreement of the rules) •Roll the die or dice, and collect the corresponding number of blocks to be placed on the game board on any of the spaces shown that will fit the block shape. •When ten unit (one) blocks have been collected, they can be ‘traded’ for a long (Ten’) and placed on a long shape on the board. •When playing with two dice, encourage students to take the amount from the ‘bank’ tens and ones, and place them on the board. If the player has enough ones in their turn they can trade using ones on the board that may already be in play. •In the hundreds game, the winner is the first to trade to 100. You will receive 5 playing boards in both colour and black and white, playing rules and variations of the game. This is a PDF file.
